Five Common Lower Back Pain Conditions

1. Herniated Disc

Herniated discs are common in the lumbar spine, with the main symptoms being sudden lower back pain or unilateral lower body pain. The intensity of the pain may gradually worsen, and it can even cause lower body numbness during rapid movements. The causes of herniated discs may be related to poor posture, such as sudden movements, prolonged bending, or suddenly performing certain actions after sitting for too long, or carrying items in an unstable posture. These poor postures can cause the lumbar spine to lose its normal curvature, increasing the burden on the intervertebral discs, leading to accelerated degeneration over time, and ultimately resulting in a herniated disc.

2. Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal in the vertebrae, which can be classified into central stenosis, lateral recess stenosis, or foraminal stenosis, leading to nerve compression. This condition is more common in individuals over the age of 50. Symptoms include weakness, pain, and numbness from the lower back to the legs, which are particularly pronounced when standing or walking. Sometimes the pain can prevent patients from continuing to walk, requiring them to rest for relief. This issue is usually caused by age-related spinal deformities and narrowing of the spinal canal, which compresses the nerves. It can also sometimes be due to congenital spinal canal stenosis.

3.Metastatic Spinal Tumors

Cancer cells that metastasize to the spine can cause severe pain symptoms, including spinal pain, neuropathic pain, and motor paralysis. Patients may experience mild fever, weight loss, and intense pain even at rest, which is not relieved by commonly used painkillers. The primary cause of these symptoms is the metastasis of cancer cells to the spine. If a patient has already been diagnosed with cancer, these symptoms are likely a result of metastasis; however, if a patient first discovers metastatic spinal tumors, further examination is needed to locate the primary cancer site. Therefore, patients exhibiting symptoms such as spinal pain, neuropathic pain, and motor paralysis require early diagnosis and treatment.

4.Spondylolisthesis and Degenerative Spondylolisthesis

This refers to the displacement of the vertebrae forward or backward. Degenerative spondylolisthesis usually occurs in the lower lumbar region, and patients may experience unilateral or bilateral lower back pain, pain or numbness in the lower body, and other symptoms. This condition is particularly common in middle-aged women. In contrast, spondylolytic spondylolisthesis is caused by excessive extension or trauma to the lumbar vertebrae, leading to fatigue fractures. Degenerative spondylolisthesis may result from abnormal shapes or conditions of the vertebrae at the back, or from disc deformities. Although both conditions are related to the lumbar spine, their causes and manifestations differ.

5.Deformative Spondylosis

Spinal aging is one of the causes of pain and may lead to stiffness or discomfort in the spine. Spinal aging sometimes does not present obvious symptoms, but if deformation continues, it may lead to spinal canal narrowing, resulting in nerve-related symptoms. As age increases, the degeneration of the spine is not limited to the vertebrae; intervertebral discs and facet joints may also degenerate. Therefore, appropriate medical and preventive measures can slow down spinal aging.

Through exercise and maintaining good posture, spinal stability and flexibility can be enhanced. In addition, choosing a mattress and seating with appropriate support can also reduce the adverse effects of spinal aging on the body.
